Have you ever, suspended between two continents, been seized by a sudden, profound curiosity while staring at the flight path screen? Hours have passed since the distant glow of Europe or the familiar coastline of North America receded, and now, below, is the austere canvas of the High North.
You watch your little digital plane trace its arc across the expanse, and in its wake, ghosting across the map, are the names. Not the familiar ones like London or New York, but whispered syllables, names that are less locations and more incantations: Iqaluit, Kangiqsujuaq, Atammik, Umanak.
These aren't the names of cities, but of settlements etched into the frozen plains of Eastern Canada, Greenland and the vast, mythic sweep of Alaska. As the air currents jostle the plane, you realize that the ground below, hidden beneath a solid, unbroken cloud, is home to people living lives utterly alien to your own.
These exotic place names, often rendered in the rounded, precise orthography of the Inuktitut language, are linguistic artifacts. They tell stories of the landscape itself: "The place where the currents meet" or "Where the ice does not form". They are utilitarian, beautiful, and utterly mysterious.
This album is in praise of these places.
